What are Refractory Anchors?

Industrial equipment such as furnaces, kilns, reactors, ovens, and vessels that are exposed to extreme temperatures observe chemical reactions or physical changes in workpieces. In most cases, these extraordinary conditions would immediately destroy the application’s shell. To prevent this from happening, refractory materials that are resistant to heat, pressure, and chemical degradation are used as protective linings.

The refractory linings are either located on the roof or vertical walls and to hold them in place anchorage is required. This anchorage is called a Refractory Anchors. The temperature and the operation conditions are stressful so the anchors have to be sturdy and heat-resistant, therefore they are manufactured using stainless steel and nickel alloys. They provide support in

  • Holding the refractory to the wall to keep it from falling inside.
  • Preventing wall buckling due to the internal thermal stresses created by high temperatures
  • Supporting the load of the refractory weight

Please note there is no standard catalog for refractory anchors, and usually, they are designed from scratch based on the application. Be it a drawing or an idea, Aakash Engineering can build your design into a finished product.

How do you decide which grade of material should you use for your refractory anchors?

Description

AISI 304

Austenitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance, also at elevated temperatures up to 1080C. The material is completely superior to ferritic stainless steels in most environments and applications.

AISI 310

Austenitic stainless steel typically used for elevated temperature applications up to 1350C. Its high chromium and nickel content provides comparable corrosion resistance, but superior resistance to oxidation than AISI 304.

AISI 316

Austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel. Very good stability against chloric media and non-oxidizing acids.

Inconel 601

Nickel-chromium-iron alloy is a general-purpose engineering material for applications that require resistance to heat and corrosion and can provide resistance to high-temperature oxidation upto 1250 C. The alloy also has good resistance to aqueous corrosion, has high mechanical strength, and is readily formed, machined, and welded.

*AISI- American Iron and Steel Institute **Austenitic alloys- Contain a high percentage of nickel and chromium, which makes them and the steel made from them very resistant to corrosion

Are we limited to these grades of materials?

No, but we can assure you these SS alloys have a low cost as compared to the other nickel-based alloys and have superior mechanical strength with high corrosion resistance properties. Additionally, alloys like grades 310 and 316 can withstand high-temperature settings. If your requirement involves other alloys such as Monel, Hastelloy, etc., it is 100% possible for us to source these materials and build them as per your drawing. Aakash Engineering is here to help you.
